Grade 5
February 2012 Update
Time is passing along so quickly. January was a very busy month with many exciting events:
-
the salmon eggs arrived in mid-January
-
Grade 5 girls and boys basketball season is well underway and both teams made us proud at their participation at the OLS tournament last week
-
we worked with the Grade One students to help them create beautiful First Nation button blankets which are displayed in the upper hallway
February will be very busy as well. Including the following:
Math: We are almost finished our unit on Measurement and will be having a unit test on Friday, February 10th. The stucdents should be able to:
-
find the perimeter and area of a rectangle and draw rectangles with either the given perimeter or area or both
-
use appropriate units for measurement. i.e. Length (mm, cm, m, km), capacity (L, mL), mass (mg, g, kg), area (cm2, m2), and volume (cm3, m3)
-
identify the volume of an object based on the displacement of a liquid
French: We have been learning unit vocabulary about the school. Students have created maps of the school and labeled them using french vocabulary, and are beginning to use the vocabulary orally (i.e. M. McCloskey est dans le gymnase). Students will have a simple vocabulary quiz on Wed. Feb. 8.
Writing: We have begun paragraph writing. The students have been identifying topic sentences and main ideas of paragraphs, and are applying their knowledge to their own writing. They are currently working on a paragraph called "The Perfect Age." Students are also revising their writing to include "dress ups" and a variety of different "openers."

January 2012 Update
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed the holiday with your family and friends. The students returned relaxed (a little tired) and eager to be back at school. We would like to thank you for your blessings and generous gifts and cards at Christmas. May God bless you in this New Year and may it be a happy and healthy one for all.
Check out the links to Grade 5 Photos of our Christmas baking and our mass on Friday, January 6th. Thank you to Mr. Stocker for posting them to our webpage. Also, thank you to Mrs. Sullivan and Mrs. MacDonald for helping the students with their Christmas baking. They had a lot of fun!
It will be a busy month with many great learning opportunities. The students are encouraged to remember the goals that they set for this second term and to work hard to become even better and more successful students. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at the school.
Sincerely,
Mr. Paquin and Mrs. Sussex
